What is Obsessions and Compulsions about?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex and heterogeneous condition. Hallmark symptoms include unwanted, persistent, and intrusive thoughts and images of harm or other undesirable ideas, called obsessions. Ritualized behaviors, called compulsions, may also be present that are designed to alleviate the obsessions. In the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013), a new category of diagnoses, the Obsessive-Compulsive Related Disorders (OCRDs), was introduced. This category of disorders has been hypothesized to share a common feature, namely a breakdown in behavioral inhibition that may manifest in persistent thoughts and repetitive behaviors. The disorders in the OCRDs include: body dysmorphic disorder, hoarding disorder, trichotillomania, and excoriation disorder. Given the wide variation in symptom presentations of OCD, as well as the diversity of symptom profiles for the other disorders in the OCRDs, interested readers are referred to Abramowitz, McKay, and Storch (2017) and Storch, Abramowitz, and McKay (2017) for detailed information on the full scope of these conditions.Each of the conditions in the OCRDs is
