What is Liberty, Freedom, Independence, and War about?

In the years before , revolutionary rhetoric that promised equality, freedom, and opportunity consumed American colonists. Influenced by the Enlightenment, this revolutionary rhetoric cast the Patriots as victims of the imperial ambitions of their British overlords. Flash points in the imperial relationship between the colonies and Great Britain saw a substantive uptick in this language's use. Riots across the colonies in the aftermath of the Stamp Act, for instance, often depicted the evils of British taxation policy enslaving the liberty-loving Americans. The Sons of Liberty carried caskets labeled "American liberty" through the streets, and onlookers mourned the supposed wrongs that Parliament had imposed on the colonies.  This Enlightenment-infused revolutionary rhetoric became central in the voluminous pamphlet and print literature that pervaded the revolutionary world.
