Purpose/Objective(s): We report patterns of recurrence among patients diagnosed with locally advanced oropharyngeal cancer who received definitive chemoradiotherapy at the University of Miami. Materials/Methods: Based on a retrospective review of medical records, 86 patients with oropharyngeal cancer were identified who started treatment between July 1992 and January 2008 and whose records provided sufficient information on disease characteristics (stage, site) and radiation treatment (modality, fractionation, and dose) with a minimum of one year follow-up. Time to locoregional failure and recurrence was measured from date of treatment start to the earliest documented evidence of local, regional, or distant disease. The rates of locoregional failure and distant metastasis were estimated by the method of cumulative incidence allowing for competing risk. Recurrence-free survival was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method, with disease-free patients censored at the time of last follow-up.
