Antidiuretics work by inhibiting water excretion in the kidneys with little effect on salt excretion. The primary antidiuretic is antidiuretic hormone (ADH), which is released by the pituitary gland in response to increased osmolarity and low blood pressure. ADH binds to V1 receptors in blood vessels and V2 receptors in kidney collecting ducts. This causes vasoconstriction and increases water reabsorption by inserting aquaporin channels, respectively.
