What is Teaching the Dhamma: Udayin about?
The Buddha tells Ananda that it is difficult to teach the Dhamma (Buddhist teachings) to others. There are five qualities that must be established in the person teaching for them to properly teach the Dhamma: 1) They must speak step-by-step 2) They must explain the sequence of cause and effect 3) They must speak out of compassion 4) They must not speak for material reward and 5) They must not disparage themselves or others. The Buddha says that without these five qualities, it is difficult for one to teach
