Carlo Gesualdo composed the madrigal "Io parto"e non piu dissi" around 1600. The piece tells the story of two lovers who get in a fight but then sleep together. Gesualdo was ahead of his time in his use of chromaticism and unconventional textures and cadences to convey different emotions throughout the piece. He was known not only as a composer but also as a nobleman who murdered his wife
