What is Lipid Bilayer Structure and Function about?
The lipid bilayer is a universal component of all cell membranes that is composed of two layers of phospholipids. Phospholipids are amphipathic molecules that contain a hydrophilic polar head and two hydrophobic fatty acid tails. They spontaneously organize into a bilayer with the heads facing out and tails in to form an impermeable barrier between the interior and exterior of cells. The bilayer is fluid and asymmetrical, with different compositions in each layer.
