This document compares Cisco StackWise and Virtual Switching System (VSS) technologies. StackWise allows stacking of switches to be managed as one logical switch. Up to 9 switches can stack through a special cable. VSS also logically combines two switches into one virtual device through a port-channel link called the Virtual Switch Link (VSL).
