This document summarizes an experiment to estimate the total hardness in water samples using EDTA titration. The principle is that EDTA reacts with Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions to form stable complexes. An indicator, Eriochrome Black T, is used which changes color from wine red to blue at the endpoint of the titration. Wells water was found to have 263.637 ppm total hardness, tap water had 54.545 ppm, and sea water had 609.01 ppm. The experiment allows determination of total hardness in given water samples.
