The battle of Kwangju, Day 3, closes to the sound of automatic weapons. That followed (at 11 p.m.) the [tear] gassing of the city at 10. We went out-saw ¤res, then couldn't breathe. Within 15 minutes the whole neighborhood was silent. At 8 p.m. we all went out-shouts from the city. . . . The whole city was full, jammed. Special forces had been replaced by regular soldiers. TV stations were off the air (burned?). We thought the revolution had come. Nervous knots of people out everywhere. People with children. Pounding footsteps on back alleys. . . . This followed a harrowing day. Rain in the morning, which put a damper on things (¤eld journal, May 20, 1980). While demonstrations were slow to start on Tuesday, May 20, by night time the whole central part of town was literally as well as ¤guratively in ¶amed. MBC, the Kwangju Tax Of¤ce, the Provincial Of¤ce Building car depot, and sixteen police substations were burned down, and the Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) and the Labor Supervision Of¤ce had been set on ¤re; there were vehicles in ¶ames all over town.
