For an agnostic society, Japan offers a surprisingly important case in the study of religion and politics. The Soka Gakkai is a lay sect of Buddhist humanism that represents the leading edge of Buddhism's evolution from its traditional role of regime legitimization to one of active participation in pluralist parliamentary government. Tracing its roots to Nichiren's thirteenth-century teachings, the Gakkai combines his faith in the Lotus Sutra with his commitment to social engagement. One aspect of that engagement is its dedicated support for the Clean Government Party (Komeito); the Gakkai embraces roughly five to ten percent of the Japanese population, making Komeito the third largest political party in Japan. Unfortunately, though, as Hiromi Shimada notes in Komeito vs. Soka Gakkai, very little scholarly research has been done on the Komeito and its connection to the Gakkai for forty years. A flood of books (including James White's The Soka Gakkai and Mass Society (1970), which remains the best English-language analysis of the organization's history and practices) came out around 1970, spurred by the Komeito's sudden growth in the 1960s.
