Edge Hardening in Steel Cutting by Simon Woods is a document available to read on EtoBox.
Thermal cutting, shearing, and punching can harden steel edges, making them more susceptible to fatigue cracking. Steel hardness is most commonly measured using the Vickers hardness test, with units of Vickers Pyramid Number (HV) or Diamond Pyramid Hardness (DPH). British Standard BS5400 Part 6 states that cut steel edges should not exceed 350 HV 30, while European Standard EN1090 specifies that S355 steel should not exceed 380 HV 10. However, these standards caveat that testing is not required if the edge
