La Trappe Abbey is a monastery in France known for being the origin of the Trappist order. It began in the 12th century and grew prosperous but suffered during wars. In the 17th century, the abbot Armand Jean le Bouthillier de Rancé reformed the order based on his religious conversion. The abbey was suppressed during the French Revolution but later rebuilt and remains occupied by Trappists today.
