After the Saint-Bartholomew Day massacre (August 1572), numerous “pacts of friendship” were signed between Catholics and Protestants. With these peace agreements, inhabitants promised to live together as “brothers, friends and citizens”. This article questions the meaning of these pacts, their function and their efficacy. By pointing out how the vocabulary of friendship used was essentially of monarchical origin, this study aims to show how the pacts were effectively addressing a political message to the King: living in a spirit of peace and friendship, the inhabitants had no need for royal intervention in order to settle their disputes. At the same time, these “pacts of friendship” show the erosion of trust in the community and of the growing need to resort to central power for the maintainance of social cohesion.Au lendemain de la Saint-Barthélemy (août 1572) de nombreux « pactes d’amitié » ont été signés entre catholiques et protestants.
