The first human settlements in Chiapas date back to 10,000 B.C. During the pre-classic period, the Mokaya culture developed, considered the oldest sedentary culture in Mesoamerica. In the classic period, the Mayans established several strategic cities for trade along the Usumacinta River. In 1482, the Mexicas conquered Chiapas, subjugating the inhabitants, and between 1524 and 1530, the Spaniards conquered the region.
