When, some ten years ago, Norberto Bobbio began to turn his attention to existentialism, he was already known in Italy for a number of essays on the phenomenological doctrine of Husserl and Scheler, particularly in its application to social and juridical problems. To the Italy of those days existentialism had the appearance of a reaction against academic philosophy, which was dominated by the idealism of Gentile. For this reason it soon became a vogue in more ‘advanced‘ intellectual circles, which sought every possible opportunity to evade the ever-tightening stranglehold of Fascist official culture. But existentialism was in fact only an evasion; it did not seem to contain rich material for the building of a new culture. Accordingly, Bobbio drew attention to what was at once the fascination and the danger of this evasion in a number of essays published in philosophical reviews and in a lecture delivered at Rome in 1942, in which for the first time he expounded the existentialist thesis. He was first arrested for his anti-Fascist activity in 1935, and again in December, 1943, for his part in the Resistance Movement in North Italy. He was released from prison three months later, and
