What is Novel Apoptosis Inducing Agents in Cancer Therapy about?

A poptosis is a normal physiologic process that serves a central function in the maintenance of normal tissue homeostasis. In the developing embryo, genetic programming ensures the "pruning" of cells that functionally must cease to exist before full development (eg, cells of digital webbing, deletion of self reactive T and B cells, and neuronal pruning). Similarly, during normal cell proliferation and at cell cycle check-points, the mechanism of apoptosis ensures genomic integrity in eukaryotic cells. The apoptotic process is characterized by specific morphologic changes that include compaction of cell size, chromatin condensation, degradation of DNA, membrane blebbing, and fragmentation of the cell into apoptotic bodies. The principal biochemical effectors of apoptosis are cysteine aspartyl serine proteases (caspases) that are synthesized as inactive zymogens that, once activated, systematically and in a hierarchical process degrade DNA and vital housekeeping proteins, and ultimately results in irreversible loss of cellular viability. 1 In mammalian cells, the caspase family consists of 14 members, although not all are involved in the process of apoptosis.
