Aluminum foil was invented in 1909 by Alfred Gautschi and was first used to wrap candies and food items. It replaced tin foil in American kitchens in 1913 due to being thinner, lighter, and less expensive. Aluminum foil protects food by keeping out oxygen, light, bacteria, and water due to forming a surface barrier of aluminum oxide when exposed to air.
