Background: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a risk factor for impaired frontal cortex-based attention and memory in addition to mood disorders. Diminished blood flow in the frontal cortices in patients with TBI has been demonstrated with neuroimaging studies. Studies suggest transcranial infrared laser stimulation (TILS) may improve frontal cortex-based cognitive and emotional functioning by promoting blood flow to the targeted area. As hypoperfusion of the cortex has been implicated in TBI symptomology, it is hypothesized that TILS targeting the frontal cortices may improve TBI-related dysfunction. Methods: This ongoing open-label study evaluated safety and potential efficacy of TILS for patients with TBI. Eleven participants diagnosed with TBI presenting with cognitive and mood disturbances are included in this report. Participants enrolled to complete eight 20-minute TILS sessions targeted at their bilateral frontal lobes. Structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to navigate individual treatment targets. The CytonSys CytonPro 5000 device was used for the TILS. The primary outcome measure was an improvement of 2 on the participant Global Rate of Change (GRC)
