Stephen of Moldavia declined to pay tribute to the Ottoman Empire in 1473, leading the Ottomans to invade Moldavia with an army of 120,000 troops. In the Battle of Vaslui in 1475, Stephen used deception tactics to cause a panic among the invading army, leading the Ottomans to flee over the next three days with hundreds being massacred. This victory was considered one of the biggest European victories over the Ottomans at the time. However, Stephen did not receive material support from other European powers
