This chapter of The Pearl describes Kino and his family fleeing from their home to escape the trackers who are pursuing them to steal the large pearl Kino discovered. As they make their way to the nearest town to sell the pearl, Kino sees three men tracking them. He leads the men into the mountains to hide and rests with his family by a pool. That night, Kino decides to ambush the trackers while they sleep. A struggle ensues where Kino kills all three men. However, during the fight Coyotito is fatally shot.
