Jose Rizal was a Filipino nationalist and polymath during the tail end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He was born in 1861 in Calamba, Philippines to a wealthy family with mixed Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and Malay ancestry. He was educated by his mother from a young age and showed intellectual gifts.
