Plasma.spraying of alumina on metal substrates is one method of fabricating for prosthetic appliances. The response of this metai-alumina bond to aging in deionized. distilled water, Ringer's solution, Medium-199 and Sprague-Dawley rats was a significant decrease in the adherence. The two metal substrates used for this project were 3 16L stainless steel and Ti-6AI-4V ELI. Statistical analyses suggested the existence of at least two different modes of fracture occurring in the tensile pull-off tests. Analysis of the aging media deionized, distilled water by flame emission spectroscopy revealed disproportionate removal of Ca and Na when compared to the amount of Al removed. The analysis of Sprague-Dawley rats after implantation of these plasma-sprayed alumina metal composites indicated increased cellular activity of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, beginning degradation of the kidneys and deposition of Al in rat tissues.
