What is Kinetics of reduction of FeO–Fe~2~MoO~4~–MoO~2~ mixtures toward the production of Fe–Mo alloys about?

The kinetics of reduction of thin powder beds of oxide mixtures by hydrogen was investigated using a thermogravimetric technique. Four oxide mixtures with different Fe/Mo ratios were investigated. The experiments were carried out isothermally in the temperature range 873–1023 K. The reductant gas flow rate was kept at 0.5 l/min, which was above the starvation rate for the reaction. Thin beds of the oxide powders with particle sizes in the micron range were used. Under these conditions, the chemical reaction rate is expected to control the reduction processes. It was found that the reduction reaction consisted of two steps. The activation energies were calculated for every reduction step involved and the values are compared. XRD analyses of the obtained alloys showed two‐phase compositions, namely Fe~__x__~Mo~__y__~ and Fe or Mo. SEM analyses show the formation of bigger Fe particles surrounded by extremely fine Fe–Mo intermetallic phase, indicating thereby that FeO gets reduced in the first step to metallic iron and undergoes grain growth while the iron molybdate complex oxide gets reduced in the second step.
