Originally published in 1986 as 'Carrier Glorious' this history tells the life in service of the RN Aircraft Carrier HMS Glorious and details the still controversial reasons for her loss in 1940 off the coast of Norway.HMS Glorious was the second of three Courageous-class battlecruisers ordered for use by the Royal Navy during the time of 'The Great War'. Designed to support the 'Baltic Project' as championed by the First Sea Lord, Lord Fisher RN, they were an relatively lightly armed and armoured class of warship built mainly for speed and scouting purposes. HMS Glorious herself was completed in late 1916 and spent the great war period at sea mainly patrolling the North Sea with the rest of her naval squadron. In November 1917 she took part in the second battle of Heligoland Bight, and was present at Scapa Flow when the Imperial German Navy as per the terms of the armistice sailed its fleet in to formally surrender to the RN. HMS Glorious was paid off after the end of the war, but instead of being scrapped like so many others, the decision was taken to modernise and rebuild her - not as an cruiser but as an Aircraft Carrier.
