What is Eratosthenes about?

Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth by measuring the shadows cast by an obelisk in Alexandria and Syene on the summer solstice. He found that while the sun was directly overhead in Syene, the shadow in Alexandria formed an angle of 7.2 degrees. Knowing the distance between the cities, he used this information to calculate the circumference, arriving at a figure close to 25,000 miles. His innovative method demonstrated the spherical shape of the Earth over 2000 years ago.
