What is Spider Silk Fibers about?
SYNTHESIS OF SPIDER SILK FIBERS SYNTHESIS/ISOLATION OF SPIDER SILK PROTEINS The synthesis and manufacture of spider silk (SS) filaments is relatively complex. Typical spider webs are constructed from several different silks, with each silk be produced in a different gland. The gland serves as a reservoir of soluble silk protein which is synthesized in specialized cells at the distal end of the gland. The soluble silk is pulled down a narrow duct to produce the solid silk fiber in a few milliseconds. There is a muscular valve at the exit which controls the flow rate of the fiber. There appear to be at least two different types of cells producing protein , which correlates with the data in the literature on the presence of two proteins in the silk from these glands. The protein in the lumen of the gland is believed to be in a liquid crystalline state to prevent fiber formation until passage down the duct Work, 1977). The mechanical and frictional forces align the protein molecules to form the nanofibers. The composition of SS has been known to be greater than 99% protein since the 1907 studies of Fischer et al. . Recent studies have been reported and published about either partial or
