As with many resins for coatings, also for alkyd resins there has been a drive to reduce VOC and change from solvent-borne to water-borne alkyds . This change has already been going on for several decades and seems to have been influenced by several factors.On the one hand there are the ever stricter VOC (volatile organic compounds) regulations and legislation that have started to come into effect towards the end of the 20 th century. Even though there were and still are significant differences in regulations between the different regions worldwide, they are a major driving force.Another contributing factor has been the development of acrylic dispersions obtained by emulsion polymerisation. A technology that has been developed more or less around the turn of the 20 th century and started to be used for the polymerisation of acrylic monomers around the 1940 to 1950s. Even though, traditionally coalescing agent was needed in the paint formulations, the binders themselves could be supplied as fully water-borne resins.
