What is Bakhtin about?

Bakhtin defines speech genres as relatively stable types of utterances that develop within various spheres of human activity. Primary speech genres do not have markers of typicality, while secondary genres are more complex with typical compositional structures. Utterances are determined by their thematic content, linguistic style, and compositional structure.
