What is Conversations with Lotman: Cultural Semiotics in Language, Literature, and Cognition about?
Germans in what the Russians refer to as 'the Great Patriotic War.' Lotman finished his service as a sergeant and returned to university in 1946. A large part of Lotman's memoirs is devoted to the war years (1995:9-34). In 1950, Lotman graduated from Leningrad State University with honours. After a great deal of searching and a pile of rejections, he found a teaching job in Tartu, Estonia. Even though Lotman, as a Jew, was not accepted into graduate school, he defended his candidate's degree (generally seen as the equivalent of an American PhD) in 1952.
