James I succeeded Elizabeth I as the first Stuart king of England. He believed in the divine right of kings and ignored Parliament, instead basing his rule on this theory. The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 saw Catholics attempt to blow up Parliament in response to their exclusion, and its failure led to its commemoration as Bonfire Night.
