In an experiment conducted by Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden under the guidance of Ernest Rutherford, alpha particles were directed perpendicularly toward a thin gold foil. It was found that a majority of the particles passed through the foil with little or no deflection, but some were scattered through larger angles, with some even scattering back towards the source. Based on this observation, Rutherford concluded that an atom should contain a relatively tiny volume of space at its center which he now knew
