What is The Republic of Bihar about?
Why is Bihar in such a mess? In this well-researched, skillfully argued book, Arvind N. Das spells out the reasons for the downfall of Bihar - one of the most important states, both politically and, surprising as it may seem, in terms of economic potential. Bihar has not always been as economically backward, politically corrupt and violent as it is today. Dr. Das reviews the highlights of its glorious past - as a center of reform and learning and as the birthplace of men like Gautama Buddha and Asoka - and takes readers through the factors that have been responsible for Bihar's fall from grace. Important for anyone wishing to understand modern India, the book presents a new and lucid view of a state that will continue to influence the country's fortunes.
