The Chipko movement was a nonviolent social and ecological movement started in India in the 1970s by rural villagers, particularly women, to protect trees from government-backed logging. It began in 1973 in Uttarakhand when villagers hugged trees to prevent logging of forests they depended on. Inspired by this success, the movement spread throughout the Indian Himalayas. The Appiko movement was the southern version started in 1983 in Karnataka to "hug trees" and stop tree cutting in the Western Ghats.
