Halloween and Día de los Muertos are celebrations observed in October and November that are sometimes confused despite important differences. Halloween occurs on October 31st and involves warding off spirits with costumes and jack-o-lanterns. Día de los Muertos takes place on November 1st and 2nd to celebrate deceased loved ones with ofrendas (altars) decorated with marigolds, pan de muerto, and photos. Families honor and remember ancestors as well as celebrate life and death.
