What is Abstract about?

The heavy metal cadmium is an environmental toxicant that induces pathophysiological changes in many organ systems. Its toxicity has been established in terms of findings, in both acute and chronic exposure, of severe alterations in the metabolic activities. The administration for 2 months of 14 ppm of CdCl 2 in the drinking water to Balb/c male mice produces changes in the lipid metabolism of peritoneal macrophages (pM). After 18 h of culture in DMEM medium, the lipids of pM were extracted by Floch's procedure and the different lipid fractions were separated by TLC using Silica gel G. Phospholipids were separated by TLC using silica Gel H. Fatty acids were measured by GLC. The following changes of pM lipids were observed: lowering of total lipids, total phospholipids, phosphatidilcholine and phosphatidilglycerol, with a parallel increase of the phosphatidilserine, phosphatidilinositol and phopshatidilethanolamine content.
