The farmer tied a red handkerchief around the bush to mark the spot and went to get his shovel. However, when he returned, the clever leprechaun had tied a red handkerchief to every bush in the bog. The farmer realized he had been tricked and would never find the gold, as leprechauns are known for outsmarting humans.
