Sprain of the Medial Ankle Ligament Complex by Patrick Pflüger; Victor Valderrabano is a Medicine article available to read on EtoBox.
What is Sprain of the Medial Ankle Ligament Complex about?
The medial ligament complex of the ankle is essential for ankle joint stability. Injuries to the medial ankle ligaments can result in significant changes of biomechanics of the ankle and may result in ligamentous ankle osteoarthritis, mainly lateral valgus ankle osteoarthritis. Prevalence of sprain of the medial ligament ankle complex might be significantly higher, occurring in up to half of all ankle sprains. Isolated partial ligament injuries with physiologic or varus hindfoot can be managed conservatively, but patients with higher-grade lesions, or in the presence of concomitant lesions, or with hindfoot valgus, may benefit from surgical reconstruction.
