What is On the Variation of Stress Along the Front of Cracks and Surface Flaws about?

The loss of the square-root stress singularity of linear elastic fracture mechanics in some three-dimensional cracked body geometries is investigated with the aid of experimental data. The change in the order of singularity from one-half is believed to occur in finite-size three-dimensional bodies of incompressible materials towards their bounding surfaces in the case of straight-front cracks and near the intersection of the curved-front of a flaw with a free boundary in the case of surface flaws. Modifications of existing analyses, to account for this variation in stress singularity, are proposed. The resulting formulations are subsequently used to construct suitable algorithms for use with photoelastic data to determine the near-tip stress singularities from these data. Comparison of the results with those derived from analytical-numerical solutions is made wherever appropriate.
