Avabai Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy was the wife of a wealthy merchant in 19th century Mumbai. Using her own funds, she paid to construct the Mahim causeway, an important link between Mumbai and its suburbs, after the government said it lacked funds. The causeway cost over 1.5 lakh rupees to build and bears a dedication to Lady Avabai in four languages. She stipulated that no tolls ever be charged for its use.
