This history of the Olympia Press is a very good read, filled with incredible stories of interesting people like Maurice Girodias (the publisher), Nabakov, JP Donleavy (who battled Girodias in court for 20+ years over The Ginger Man, and wound up owning Olympia), Terry Southern, Mason Hoffenberg, Alex Trocchi, Christopher Logue, etc. Along the way, you'll read about the birth, publication, and attempted banning of such classics as Lolita, The Ginger Man, Candy, and the Story of O. I highly enjoyed reading this. If Girodias had not existed, someone would have had to invent him. He was an amazing character that seems to have stepped from the pages of a bizarre novel. His life has to be read to be believed. Indeed, I think anyone who reads this book will enjoy it. In fact, I'll even go so far as to suggest that readers will also enjoy "The Candy Men" by Niles Southern, which details the writing, publication, and numerous legal battles concerning Olympia's "Candy," which became a cult classic and movie. Both books are immensely readable and enjoyable.
