What is Dedication to Satish Dhawan about?
Although problems of rural relevance are intimately connected with the lives of most people in developing countries, they have been conventionally ignored as being outside the mainstream of international science and technology. They have also been considered to be outside the scope of institutions of higher learning. Against that background, Satish Dhawan, as Director of the Indian Institute of Science, had the vision, values and valour to encourage us, two Professors of the Institute, to turn our attention to rural problems and establish in 1974 the now famous ASTRA programme for the Application of Science and Technology to Rural Areas. From this programme emerged the Institute's sustainable energy work, including that on rural energy consumption patterns, biomass resources, woodstoves, biogas, gasifiers, etc., and even more the alternative paradigm for Indian science in which the focus is on addressing the needs of the poor with local resources --both material and human.
