A shift register is a set of flip flops connected in series so that the output of one becomes the input of the next. Data is shifted through the register by one bit position on each clock pulse. A 4-bit serial-in serial-out shift register is shown, where on each clock pulse the data from the first flip flop is shifted into the next flip flop. Shift registers can be used to convert between serial and parallel forms for communication between computers and peripheral devices.
