The Inquisition was an institution within the Catholic Church that fought against heresy and other violations of canon law through ecclesiastical tribunals. It would investigate individuals accused of heresy and, if convicted, hand them over to secular authorities to be punished, with the goal of deterring others from committing similar offenses. The most famous case involved Galileo Galilei being tried in 1633. The last execution carried out by the Inquisition was in Spain in 1826.
