Radiotherapy uses radiation to treat cancer by damaging cancer cell DNA to kill them or slow their growth. External beam radiotherapy uses radiation beams from outside the body targeted at tumors, while brachytherapy inserts radioactive sources inside the body near tumors. As depth increases, percentage depth dose from photon radiation decreases in an inverse relationship. Applicators in kilovoltage therapy units are used at very low, low, and medium energies to treat different conditions like skin cancer.
