Lavoisier investigated combustion by sealing a material inside a glass vessel with air. (1) His hypothesis was that if air mixed with the burning material, the mass would increase. (2-4) He tested this by heating mercury inside a sealed vessel until it formed a red coating, showing it reacted with part of the air.
