Protein synthesis involves transcription and translation. Transcription copies DNA into messenger RNA (mRNA) in the nucleus. Translation uses mRNA to build proteins from amino acids on ribosomes in the cytoplasm. There are three types of RNA: mRNA carries DNA instructions out of the nucleus, rRNA is part of ribosomes, and tRNA brings amino acids to ribosomes. Mutations are changes in genetic code that can affect single genes or whole chromosomes.
