Rotating Biological Contactors (RBC) contain rotating discs or corrugated packing units that are partially submerged in liquid waste. Biofilm grows on the surfaces of the discs or packing. As the surfaces rotate out of the liquid, the biofilm is exposed to air where oxygen can diffuse in and carbon dioxide can escape. The rotation also aerates the liquid.
