With these words the writer of the Exodus account has described the building of two cities whose whereabouts in Egypt has given rise to much discussion and controversy. The importance of finding out what these names stood for is vital, not only in establishing the beginning of the route of the Exodus, but also for discovering the location of the capital of Egypt in Ramesside times. In seeking to answer the second question Egyptologists have in the past put forward a variety of places that could be equated with these cities, and this has tended to confuse the matter further. It is therefore desirable that the question be re-examined thoroughly in the light of all the existing evidence. It should be stressed at the outset that this article is no more than an attempt to find out where these cities were situated and is written from the point of view of an Egyptologist.
