This finite element study evaluated the influence of implant length and diameter on stress distribution in bone. Computer models simulated implants in the molar region of the mandible under average masticatory forces. Models varied implant length from 8 to 18 mm and diameter from 2.9 to 6.5 mm. Results found that increasing implant diameter from 3.6 to 4.2 mm reduced stress more than increasing length.
